RESEARCH NOTES

All-time AFL records were compiled by the Elias Sports Bureau and printed in both the American Football League Official History 1960-69 (St. Louis; The Sporting News, 1970) and the Jack Horrigan/Mike Rathet book The Other League (Chicago; Follett Publishing, 1970).  For the most part, the records presented here are exactly as reported in those books.  I did make some minor editorial revisions and a few substantive changes, but these affect only a small part of the original material.

I made three types of substantive changes to the Elias records.  First, I deleted a few categories that were not statistically meaningful or were not consistently reported throughout the different sections.  Second, I added categories for two-point conversions, coaching wins and winning percentage, most seasons leading the league in receiving yards, and average gain per reception.  Third, I clarified or supplemented a few categories that were unclear in their original presentation.  Data for my additions, clarifications and supplements came from the Sporting News book, from The Sports Encyclopedia: Pro Football by David Neft and Richard Cohen (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1988), and from the Carroll/Gershman/Neft/Thorn book Total Football II (New York: Harper Collins, 1999).

I could not independently verify all of these records and suspect that there may be an occasional error or omission.  For instance, the records credit Bob Scarpitto with the third-highest punting average for a single season: 45.2 yards, averaged over 77 punts.  Other sources, though, credit him with 76 punts and a 45.8 average, which would be the highest single-season average if accurate.  I have not yet been able to resolve this problem.

Another issue involves one of the punt return records.  In the 2005 edition of the NFL Record and Fact Book an entry appeared for the first time: Bake Turner, credited as co-holder of the single-game record with seven fair catches in a 1966 AFL game between New York and Miami.  This entry was not included in the Elias records and did not appear in any NFL record book before 2005 (although, oddly, it appeared in the team record section one year earlier, in the 2004 book).  I was not able to find an explanation for why this record remained unrecognized for so long, but I did include it here and credit the 2005 NFL book as its source.

Notwithstanding the occasional question, these records appear to be highly accurate and properly credit the AFL players who set them.  I would welcome any information that would help expand or improve them.
